Casefile 009A - Video/Action for Violet

[Harry's looking sort of beat up today. Not as bad as in the aftermath of the Garbage-mon Invasion, but definitely a bit dusty and road-worn at the moment.]

Okay, so a couple things I learned today. First, big swarms of manic dog Pokemon having turf wars or something makes travel difficult.

[They're not strong enough to be a threat individually, but there's something to be said for the power of mobs. Wading through brawling tigers and hyenas got tiring pretty fast, to put it mildly.]

Secondly-

Gyaaar.

[Yeah, that massive blue thing that's been behind Harry? It's a freshly-evolved Gyarados. Her head sort of flops down next to Harry, looking more bored than anything right now.]

Secondly, that I need to apologize for doubting anyone who said that those little brain-damaged fish things got useful after a while. ...And ask if there are any discounts available on bulk Poke-chow so Butters here doesn't depopulate entire routes when she eats.

By brain damaged fish things do you mean to say a Magikarp?

Tell me it's not a more accurate description. Honestly.

[He's managed to catch two, one on each occasion he's been to Johto. Both have done little else besides flop around feebly, in water or on land. Until this, anyway.]

Oh, no. I agree, it's an adequate description. I have one myself.

Yeah, apparently they're not an elaborate prank on new trainers.

[Says the person who's been here almost a year now.]

I figured they evolved after a while, just wasn't expecting the difference to be so stark. Kinda like having your chihuahua wake up as a Howitzer.

[Robin isn't entirely sure what a chihuahua or a Howitzer is. If they have those breeds in her world, they're probably called by different names. She just assumes he's talking about other pokemon, and makes a note to remember the names to look them up later.]

And how does one get the Magikarp to evolve? I've heard some descriptions that are... a little more elaborate than I'd expect to see in nature.

As far as I can figure out they either evolve when exposed to copious amounts of drooling tiger-dogs and hyena-things, or it's just a matter of being extremely patient and training them a lot.

[It's almost like the nebulous forces ruling Johto don't WANT it to be easy to obtain the giant sea-snakes of destruction.]

...and it might warrant some scientific examination, but I'm fairly certain it's not the first option.

Copious amounts of drooling tiger-dogs and hyena-things sounds like a more compelling story, though.

Well, the full story is that I tried heading out of Violet this morning, and got forced to turn back by sheer force of numbers. I suppose having to get through the last stretch back into the city with nothing but a fish is KIND OF compelling, in a cautionary tale sort of way.

I'm impressed you made it.

Mostly due to the fact that all the Growlithe and... Poochyhena, I think they're called? Were more interested in fighting each other.

[Especially once the Magikarp evolved. Intimidate can be a useful ability.]

Ah, so you've the gift of luck, then?

Heh. Maybe if that includes bad luck as well as the good.

Every blessing comes with a curse, it seems. In some cultures, it is believed that the universe does this to keep itself balanced.
